Are you concerned with students being more focused on grades than learning? Are you dissatisfied with giving feedback that students ignore? The answer to these problems may be changing how you assess learning and assign grades. Recently, several alternative grading systems have been proposed to help with issues of student motivation and effective feedback on learning, but which is the right system for you and your students? In this workshop, we will discuss two alternative grading systems—Grading for Growth and Specifications Grading, the pros and cons of each, and how they are being implemented in General Biology.
